Best New Summer Movies in Theaters 2017

When not outside enjoying the beautiful summer weather this year, we highly recommend making your way to the movie theater and catching one of the exciting new movies coming this summer 2017. From high budget blockbusters to more story driven pieces, there is something this summer for every movie goer! Today, we highlight some of the best new movies coming this summer and when we can expect them.

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5) Marvel's favorite crew of cosmic comrades returns to the big screen in one of the most-hyped summer blockbusters of 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Follow as the Guardians blast their way through the universe (the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that is) to surprise, save the day. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. returns Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel to leading roles. Kurt Russell makes his first Marvel appearance in this new summer movie as Ego, the father of Chris Pratt's Star-Lord.

  2. Snatched (May 12) Amy Schumer teams up with the legendary Goldie Hawn for a daughter-mother comedy to steal the summer. Also featuring Joan Cusack, Snatched tells the story of a bad breakup followed by an unexpected family getaway to help heal the wounds.

  3. Alien: Covenant (May 19) Ridley Scott resumes his throne as King of Sci-Fi in the newest installment along the story arc of the original 1979 sci-fi/horror classic, Alien. Starring Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, James Franco and Katherine Waterston, Alien: Covenant is the direct follow-up to the 2012 hit, Prometheus. We look forward to having the bridge between the Prometheus sequel and the original Alien franchise covered in this newest addition. This is a must-see of the summer!   4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (May 26) Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush return with newcomer Javier Bardem in the newest installment of the Pirates series. This time, our heroes will be searching for the trident of Poseidon, an undoubtedly powerful and supernatural item that surely will provide our heroes with immortality, infinite riches, unquestionable power or some combination of the 3.

  5. Baywatch (May 26) Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron are teaming up to bring the 90s classic Baywatch to the big screen. This will definitely draw a lot of eyeballs, but we'd be lying if we said we had high hopes here.

  6. Wonder Woman (June 2) Gal Gadot will star in the first Wonder Woman movie since her reintroduction in last years Batman v. Superman blockbuster. Featuring music by the extraordinarily talented Hans Zimmer, we're excited to see what this superlady can bring to a genre dominated by men. Why not nerd out for this one?   7. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (June2) The beloved childhood cartoon superhero is taking his act to the big screen in this animated movie in theaters summer 2017 for the kiddos. Starring Kevin Hart, Jordan Peele, Nick Kroll and Kristen Schaal, Captain Underpants is sure to come with plenty of humor... toilet humor, of course. Be prepared for poop jokes and farts, parents! And loads of laughs.

  8. The Mummy (June 9) The Mummy took the movie world by storm when it hit theaters in 1999. This June, The Mummy returns to the summer blockbuster lineup with a new look and a new cast. A more serious tone has been hinted at in this one, now starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella and Russell Crowe, a departure from the light-hearted action featured in the first go. Be prepared to ditch compelling plot lines in exchange for eye-popping visual effects with this one!

  9. It Comes at Night (June 9) This summer, screens will be graced with what appears to be the rare high-quality horror flick. Centered around a troubled family and an abusive husband who unwillingly take in a group of travelers, this movie is sure to provide the ghostly chills and murderous surprises that we usually don't expect until October.

  10. Cars 3 (June 16) Disney and Pixar bring back one of the most beloved animated movies of all time when Cars 3 returns to movie theaters in 2017. Owen Wilson returns with Nathan Fillion, Armie Hammer and Kerry Washington.

  11. All Eyez on Me (June 16) Tupac Shakur is the subject in this years hip hop biopic. Starring Demetrius Shipp Jr., a spot on facial match for the late rapper, All Eyez on Me will aim to bring a troubled life that was also filled with so much hope and creativity to the big screen.   12. Rough Night (June 16) With a high-powered female cast, Rough Night is sure to be one of the main comedies to watch this summer at the movie theaters.   13. The Beguiled (June 23) What have we been lacking so far? Oh duh, a good old fashioned period piece. This Civil War flick by one Sofia Coppola and featuring Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Colin Farrell is an unlikely new summer movie in that we could be hearing a lot about it come Oscar season. Or maybe not. Regardless, this new summer movie is on our radar for 2017.

  14. Despicable Me 3 (June 30) This is a summer of nostalgia, alright. Despicable Me is also returning to the big screen for the third installment in the series. This new summer movie 2017 features Steve Carell in his leading role as the sweet boy villain Gru and of course, plenty of minions.

  15. The House (June 30) Will Ferrell is taking another swing at it this summer alongside Amy Poehler in The House. Based around an illegal casino run out of a basement, we are really pulling for this one to be good. Don't let us down, Will!

  16. Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7) Following Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man is confused. He's balancing being a hero with high school and homecoming... sounds stressful! The websingler returns to the big screen in Spider-Man: Homecoming with Tom Holland reprising his role as the titular hero and also featuring Robert Downey Jr. and Marissa Tomei.

  17. War for the Planet of the Apes (July 14) The reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise has been highly successful, with the previous two installments being at the better end of the sci-fi movie spectrum over the past two decades. The reboot returns with War for the Planet of the Apes, starring Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and Andy Serkis.

  18. Dunkirk (July 21) Christopher Nolan is gracing us with another feature film this year and it's not another Batman. Dunkirk tells the story of Allied soldiers surrounded by Germans and evacuated in the midst of World War II. THIS is the movie to catch this summer. Trust us!

  19. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (July 21) Luc Besson, writer of classic movies like The Fifth Element and Leon: The Professional, brings a new science fiction film to movie theaters this summer. Join Cara Delevingne, Dane DeHaan and Clive Owen on a special mission in a different, new universe!

  20. The Dark Tower (July 28) Rounding out a great season of new summer movies in 2017 is The Dark Tower, a dramatic fantasy sure to transport viewers to a new world. Starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, The Dark Tower takes place in a wild west-like landscape with ancient secrets.
